I worked on finishing the Mainroom this week, making sure all the furniture had their own folders and layers.
I found the rust interesting to colour on the door as the pixel art prevents the seamless blending so I opted for a blobby style of colouring, picking random colours around the room to tone down/up and add to the door.I really like the mix of blue and orange which contrasts eachother nicely being on opposite sides of the colour wheel. I used blue for the highlights as in my head the doors are opposite the window in a 3d space so the sky would reflect on the non-rusty portions of the door.
Another technique I use alot in this piece is rim lighting particularly on the bed frames and the broken glass in the mirror. I also managed to include many eyes in the wood engravings, and the eye shapes in the metal parts of thhe door. I part that was a little hard was in section where the lineart is spare such as the bedsheets, because I had to create interest through colour which means changing the undertone of the off white colour so that it doesn't draw the eyes too much becasue while we are drawn to bright and interesting things we are also drawn to negative space when everything is somewhat interesting.
One other difficult part to draw was the floor perspective, as you are spinning it wouldn't make sense for the wooden panels to go the same direction all the time so I tried to make it work, but in the end it has its flaws.
Not to mention I finished the animation, colouring and shading all the frames.
It was a tedious process, as I would select one colour and colour each frame before moving on to the next colour.
Unfortunately I found out after finishing the animation there is a high chance we won't be using it as they can't get the animation working in unity. However at least I got expereince in making animations.
I also worked on the mainroom desk, so when you click on the desk you see a top down view of the desk. So that the player can interact with the journal, so I kept the pages blank but textured so that we can put whatever is necessary with text using Amy's handmade font. I found colouring the wood texture challenging but in the end I went with random swirls in a lighter colour to make it more polished. Using shadows was hard, as the light is top down making shadows minimal besides the darkest cast shadow.
We also got a new member so that's exciting! Sumaya, I think she is going to be helping the coders and take some burden from their shoulders.
